Intro to figure skating (STAR 1) program
Our Intro to FS class is our entry program for the Skate Canada STAR 1-5 figure skating assessment program. Intro to FS is for skaters who have completed CanSkate Stage 3 and would like to continue developing skating skills and technique. Intro to FS will introduce skaters to the sport of figure skating and its disciplines: freeskate, skills and ice dance. The goal of the program is to prepare skaters for successful completion of the STAR 1 assessments (tests) in freeskate, skills and ice dance.
This includes:
- Skills: edges, turns, power and field moves.
- Freeskate: jump and spin technique as well as the introduction of programs to music.
- Ice Dance: dance steps and technique, pattern dances, timing and carriage.
Assessments – Skaters in this program will be assessed by the coach that is teaching them each discipline (freeskate, skills & ice dance). All assessments in the STAR 1-5 program will be assessed to a standard and there is a fee of $15 to attempt each assessment. Coaches will inform skaters and their parents/guardians when the child is ready for an assessment.
Please see the chart below for the skills assessed at the STAR 1 level and beyond.
